Description
Perth Museum & Visitor Information Centre
Step back in time to the 1840s as you explore the Matheson House, home of the acclaimed Perth Museum. Nestled right downtown at 11 Gore Street East, this beloved tourist attraction is a designated National Historic Site. In addition to exhibits and period rooms, visitors will find maps and brochures, public washrooms with a changing table, complimentary Wi-Fi, a water-refill station, and a thoughtfully curated gift shop brimming with clothing, accessories, books, puzzles, and other keepsakes.
Constructed in 1840 for the Honourable Roderick Matheson, a prosperous merchant and senator in Canada’s first parliament, this stone dwelling boasts four period rooms—the parlour, dining room, formal drawing room, and a warm, inviting kitchen—painstakingly restored and furnished to reflect the lifestyle of the Matheson family, who resided here for 90 years. On the upper level you’ll peruse exhibits chronicling Perth’s history, while the Visitor Information Centre showcases displays on the famed Mammoth Cheese and the Last Fatal Duel in Upper Canada.
